RUNCORN RLC 28 Widnes Saints 44 - May 11, 2009, 04:19:21 PM
Runcorn RLC turned out for their opening fixture of the 2009 campaign full of confidence after a productive pre-season.
The first game at their new home was sponsored by Trust in Widnes and branded as “The Battle of the Bridge II” and was always going to be a hotly contested affair.
Both sides gave debuts to lots of new faces. With Coach Calland commenting on how delighted he was with the performance from Fozard, Willings, Green, Dunne, Edge and Kelly.
Rob Calland's men found themselves behind early on to a nicely worked try down the left hand side. Converted by the Saints.
After some bruising exchanges in the middle Runcorn’s defence was once again breached, with the Saints missing the conversion.
Runcorn, playing up the hill, started to probe at the Widnes defence and scored with Kyle McGreevey on the end of a well worked move.
Courtnage provided great yards up the hill with some powerful running, and usually supported by the superb running of Jamie Edge.
Both sides continued to search for an opening and with the introduction of a number of ex-Runcorn players Widnes where next on the score sheet.
Again Runcorn’s playmaker Willings combined with Patterson to put Forshaw in for another try.
Widnes responded with another try after Runcorn’s defence began to tire.
Half Time 10-26
After some words of encouragement from Calland and Leech, Runcorn responded perfectly by scoring two quick fire tries right after half time.
With the hill to Runcorn’s advantage, Widnes began to tire but with a slick move against the run of play, started and finished by MOM Craig Millington, Widnes started to get into the 2nd half.
Runcorn once again refused to lay down and scored a well worked try in the corner with McGreevey going round his opposite number to score from the half way line.
Unfortunately for Runcorn, their debut at The Pavilions ended in defeat with Widnes once again going in with a powerhouse try from Lamb.
Coaches Calland and Leech where disappointed with the loss but very pleased with the way the team played, the individual performances of the players and proved that the greatest game on the planet is alive and kicking on the south of the Mersey.
Runcorn RLC would like to thank club sponsors Karalius Brothers for donating the rugby posts and Tony from Integra Precision Engineering for welding them together plus Stuart from Beechwood Gardening Services for erecting the posts.
