New Broughton 28 RUNCORN RLC 24 - June 09, 2009, 08:55:59 PM

Runcorn travelled to New Broughton in an optimistic mood after a good performance against Wigan Riversiders.

Unfortunately the green and golds couldn't carry their form forward and slipped to a close defeat against a very ordinary New Broughton side.

Both sides found it difficult to cross in the opening exchanges.

Two soft penalties from Runcorn allowed the hosts to walk the length of the field to score a converted try on 14 minutes.

After the restart Runcorn's slick handling saw McWhirter put Edge in for a Patterson converted try.

After great pressure Runcorn looked like they would be next to post but unfortunately for the visitors it was New Broughton who scored another converted try on 25 minutes.

Half time 12-6

Despite great work from half backs McAdam, Willings and Ryan plus powerful drives from Forshaw, Elwell and Dunne it took until the 22 minute of the second half for another score.

Unfortunately it came from the home side, which was unconverted.

Runcorn once again were their own worst enemy giving away crucial field position with soft penalties, this allowed their large prop to barrel over from close range for a converted try.

This set back looked to put the game out of reach for Runcorn until barnstorming Vice Captain Fozard carried the team forward and score for Patterson to convert once again.

Once again the home team scored to sink the revived spirit of Runcorn until once again Fozard blasted his way over to put the score at 28-18

With the introduction of Lepts at hooker, Runcorn finally stepped up a gear and with slick passing saw Elwell go in for a well deserved, converted try.

With seconds left on the clock Runcorn battered the New Broughton defence but left too much to do.

After the game Coach Calland said "we had lots of options today and mixed it up a little, so can take lots of positives from the game. New Broughton will be in the mix at the end of the season so I am proud of how well the lads did against them today, gives me a lot of selection issues ahead of our game next week, which is nice"
